Girls In Uniform

Nicole Brenny & Danica Olders are Girls in Uniform, an experimental electronic music project that draws influence from both industrial and pop music.

The project started when Nicole moved to Montreal from Minneapolis, Minnesota to broaden her production skills and expand her musical palette.

I caught up with Nicole from her Brooklyn apartment, where she now resides and records happily in her bedroom.

Montreal seems to have had a big influence on you, can you tell us about how you ended up here and the time you spent making your record?

“I was talking with Matt Otto (of Majical Cloudz) at SXSW last year. He assured me the Mile-End would be a place where I could be easily inspired, live cheaply, and play as many shows as I wanted… I took a leap of faith and moved to Avenue du Parc four days later.

I had just released a pop album that I recorded in a studio, but I wasn’t all that excited about it and I felt there was so much more left to explore sonically. I had no idea that I would be creating a completely new project and that it would be as harsh and grungy as it ended up being.”

The new project is grungy, but there is also something soft behind the waves of distortion and layered kicks that dominate her tracks. The recent addition of Danica Olders brings the project to new heights, she is the visual half the project and her presence also inspired the VHS tape version of their debut EP.

“We were sitting on Danica’s couch watching Pretty Woman. There is a part in the movie where the soundtrack gets really loud and the tape was screwed up, so the soundtrack became warped. I was really into the aesthetic and mentioned how cool it would be to record to video cassette. Danica suggested we try it and before we knew it, we were making a VHS tape.”

What are you most excited about post launch?

Danica Olders:

“Sleep… and travelling to Portugal, Wisconsin, Spain, Mexico… and to make music videos. I hope we get to travel. I hope we make it to the big time. I hope we become the new Spice Girls and I want a famous pizza shop to let me name designer pizzas.”
