Last Friday I went to Casa de Popolo to see Love on Top, the final instalment of the TOPS and Calvin Love Tour. This was a special homecoming show for TOPS as they’ve spent the past month with Calvin Love traveling through LA, Austin, Chicago, to name a few towns. Local psych-rocker Alex Calder also joined the evening’s line up.
I’d never heard Edmontonian synth-crooner Calvin Love before, but I was impressed with his smooth romantic tracks. Heads were bobbing to hits Magic Hearts and My Bones Dance For You from his album New Radar.
I was lucky enough to spot Jane Penny’s (lead singer of TOPS) mum in the crowd looking very proud. I caught up with Jane afterward and she commented: “It was really fun to play in Montreal. The crowd was energetic and full of friendly faces. It’s nice to be home.”
In fact, everyone seemed to be in high spirits except for Calder, who had this to say about it: “It was a fun show, but a little strange to play considering I just recently retired from music to pursue a career in cooking.”
The highlight of the night was definitely the show’s finale – a double band cover of Candi Stanton’s Young Hearts Run Free.
